What is a PUC certificate?

PUC stands for Pollution Under Control. Every vehicle contributes to air pollution by a certain amount of carbon emission. A PUC certificate is an indication that your vehicle’s carbon emission is under control and within the permissible limits.

Is the PUC certificate compulsory?

If you own any kind of vehicle, irrespective of whether two-wheelers or four-wheelers, having a PUC certificate is mandatory. It is the most important document required during the renewal of your vehicle’s insurance policy. The IRDAI, i.e., Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, has made it compulsory to produce the certificate to renew the policy.

How to get an online PUC certificate?

Submitting a PUC certificate online application is hassle-free, considering how easy it has become to access the web services. The applicant must visit an available PUC center for certificate online application through the Parivahan Seva portal. The Parivahan Seva portal has been developed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India portal to help you with your queries.  A PUC center is present in almost every petrol pump in a state across the country.

After visiting the portal, click on the PUC certificate section. After the window opens, it asks for various details of your vehicle. You must enter your vehicle’s registration number and the last five digits of the vehicle’s chassis number. After filling in the captcha code, you will be redirected to the page where your certificate online application is verified. It will contain your PUC certificate. If the certificate is updated and is ready to be used, you can download and print it.

What is the time validity of a PUC certificate?

A PUC certificate is not a one-time certificate. It needs to be updated periodically. A PUC certificate is issued when a car is purchased for the first time, valid for one year. After the certificate’s lapse, you need to take the vehicle for a test to a nearby PUC testing center, and a new certificate is issued, which is valid for another six months. 

What are the expenses behind issuing a PUC certificate?

The two parameters that determine the amount are the fuel type and the vehicle type, i.e., two-wheeler or four-wheeler. Considering the factors, the amount varies from INR 60 to INR 100.

What are the other actions performed during a vehicle purchase?

When a vehicle is purchased, a road tax is supposed to be paid during its registration. One can either make the payment all at once or pay every year.

How is the road tax calculated?

Road tax calculation varies from state to state. For example, the Telangana road tax payment is calculated differently than Maharashtra. 

Telangana Transport Department India determines Telangana Road Tax payment under the Telangana Motor Vehicle Taxation Act from vehicle owners in the state. The various factors that determine the Telangana road tax payment are the vehicle’s age, make and manufacturer, fuel type, length and width of the vehicle, engine capacity, purpose (personal or commercial use), place of manufacture, etc.  The factors are different for other states. Therefore, it will be correct to say that the road tax payment is state-specific.
